The Macarena is a super fun and easy-to-learn dance that became wildly popular in the 1990s thanks to the catchy song "Macarena" by Los Del Río. It’s often done at weddings, school discos, and parties because it’s simple, repetitive, and silly in the best way.


A bit about the dance:

Origin: Spain (by the duo Los Del Río)

Genre: Latin pop/dance

Famous for: The arm movements and hip sways

Vibe: Playful, cheesy, and universally crowd-friendly

How to Do the Macarena (Basic Steps):


The dance goes in an 8-count pattern and is usually repeated over and over.


Steps:


1. Right arm out, palm down

2. Left arm out, palm down

3. Right palm up

4. Left palm up

5. Right hand to left shoulder

6. Left hand to right shoulder

7. Right hand to back of head (like you're relaxing)

8. Left hand to back of head

9. Right hand to left hip

10. Left hand to right hip

11. Right hand to right butt cheek

12. Left hand to left butt cheek

13. Wiggle your hips in a circle (usually four counts)

14. Jump a quarter turn to your left and start over


Repeat facing a new direction each time!

Dance: The Macarena 

1. Put your right arm out.
2. Put your left arm out.
3. Turn your right hand up.
4. Turn your left hand up.
5. Touch your left shoulder with your right hand.
6. Touch your right shoulder with your left hand.
7. Put your right hand behind your head.
8. Put your left hand behind your head.
9. Put your right hand on your left hip.
10. Put your left hand on your right hip.
11. Put your right hand on your right bottom.
12. Put your left hand on your left bottom.
13. Move your hips in a circle. (1, 2, 3, 4)
14. Jump and turn left. Start again!
