🟥A2 ESOL: How to Say Sorry to Someone





Saying sorry is important in English. It helps keep good relationships with other people.

A good apology has three parts:

1. Say Sorry – Use words like "I’m sorry" or "I apologize."


2. Explain What Happened – Say what you did wrong (if needed).


3. Offer to Fix It – Say how you will make it better.



Ways to Apologize

Small mistakes

"Sorry!"

"I didn’t mean to do that."

"Oops! My mistake."


Bigger mistakes

"I’m very sorry for what I did."

"I apologize for my mistake."

"Please forgive me."


Apologies with a reason

"I’m sorry I was late. There was a lot of traffic."

"I apologize for forgetting your birthday. I was very busy."


Apologies with a solution

"I’m sorry I lost your book. I will buy you a new one."

"I apologize for missing the meeting. I will read the notes."
