    Romeo and Juliet – A Simple Play

    Characters (7 people):

    1. Narrator – tells the story
    2. Romeo – a young man
    3. Juliet – a young woman
    4. Tybalt – Juliet’s cousin
    5. Mercutio – Romeo’s friend
    6. Friar Lawrence – a priest
    7. Prince – the ruler of Verona

    Scene 1: A Fight

    Narrator: Two families, Montague and Capulet, hate each other. They fight in the streets.

    Prince: Stop! No more fighting!


    Scene 2: Romeo and Juliet

    Narrator: Romeo and his friends go to a Capulet party. Romeo sees Juliet.

    Romeo: You are very beautiful!

    Juliet: And you are very kind!

    Narrator: But their families are enemies.


    Scene 3: A Secret Wedding

    Narrator: Romeo and Juliet love each other. They go to Friar Lawrence.

    Romeo: We want to get married!

    Friar Lawrence: Yes. Maybe this will stop the fighting.

    Narrator: They get married in secret.


    Scene 4: A Fight

    Narrator: Tybalt is angry.

    Tybalt: Romeo, fight me!

    Romeo: No, I don’t want to fight.

    Narrator: Mercutio fights Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio.

    Mercutio: I am dying!

    Narrator: Romeo is very angry. He fights Tybalt and kills him.

    Prince: Romeo must leave Verona!


    Scene 5: A Plan

    Narrator: Juliet is sad.

    Juliet: I want to be with Romeo!

    Friar Lawrence: Drink this. It will make you sleep. People will think you are dead.

    Narrator: Juliet drinks. She sleeps.


    Scene 6: A Mistake

    Narrator: Romeo does not know the plan.

    Romeo: Juliet is dead! I cannot live! (Drinks poison)

    Narrator: Juliet wakes up.

    Juliet: Oh no! Romeo is dead! (Takes a knife) I must be with him!


    Scene 7: Peace

    Narrator: The two families see Romeo and Juliet dead.

    Prince: No more fighting! Peace now!

    Narrator: The families stop fighting, but it is too late.
